Socio-Economic Perspective of Women Entrepreneurship in the Palm Oil Value Chain in Ife Zone, Osun State, Nigeria

Abstract

Using a multi-stage sample of 120 respondents and structured interview schedules, this study assessed the socio-economic status of women in the palm oil value chain in Ife Zone, Osun State. Mean age was 47.2 years, 41.7% had secondary education and 81.7% were married. Reported benefits included the ability to meet household demand (95.0%), improved feeding (95.0%) and better income (75.0%). Chi-square analysis established significant associations between personal characteristics and socio-economic status. The study recommends gender-sensitive credit schemes with low interest rates and flexible collateral to help women expand their palm oil enterprises.
