Birth Control and Sustainable Development: Evidence, Barriers, and Policy Directions from Nigeria

Abstract

Birth control — encompassing modern contraceptive technologies, traditional fertility-regulation practices and reproductive health education — plays a crucial role in achieving sustainable development. This study examined the relationship between birth control and sustainable development in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo LGA of Ondo State, combining a 2015–2026 literature review with a descriptive cross-sectional survey of 108 adults (90% response). 87.0% considered birth control beneficial, 92.6% acknowledged the importance of medical practitioners in contraceptive guidance and 89.8% supported government involvement in reproductive health programmes. Religious affiliation emerged as the most significant factor shaping attitudes. The paper recommends integrating birth control into national sustainable development strategies through improved funding, community-based health services, faith-sensitive awareness campaigns and comprehensive sexuality education.
